Laboratory and Field Technician



Based at East Malling in Kent, NIAB EMR is an internationally renowned plant science organisation conducting research on horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment, with particular emphasis on perennial and clonally propagated fruit crops. NIAB EMR is part of The NIAB Group, the UK’s fastest growing crop science organisation, with rapidly expanding research capabilities in plant genetics, agronomy, farming systems and data science, the largest national field trials capability, and strong research links with industry, Government and academia. Employing more than 400 people across the UK, NIAB provides scientific research, technical services and practical advice to improve the yield, efficiency and resilience of crop production across the arable, forage and horticulture sectors.

We are seeking a Technician to support several research and development projects in precision agriculture/horticulture in collaboration with commercial companies. These exciting projects are at the forefront of new technologies being used or that will be used in modern agriculture/horticulture production.

This post is based in the Pest and Pathology Ecology Department and the responsibility will primarily be in providing technical support to research leaders in delivering project research outcomes. The successful applicant must be able to work as part of an enthusiastic team.

The successful applicant must have a BSc qualification or other qualifications applicable to agriculture or horticulture, and prior experience in co-ordinating and delivery of agriculture/horticulture research and development. This role requires accurate attention to detail, application of good laboratory practices, willingness to work with prototype software, devices and machines. You will also be expected to drive small tractors and undertake work on commercial farms. The applicant should have a strong interest in both laboratory and field work as well as precision technologies. A driving licence is essential as travel off-site is required and experience in driving a tractor is desirable due to the need to operate tractor driven machinery on commercial farms.

The post requires good organisation and communication skills, and a proven ability to work effectively within a team, and independently. A willingness to work collaboratively is also essential.
